Fort Atkinson State Historical Park - Ft. Calhoun, NE. Here the expedition met with the Missouri and Oto Indians. This was the first major "council" to bring the Indian nations together under the "protection" of their new "father." The plan was to increase trade between the whites and Indians, and to keep the British out. The original Fort Atkinson was built in 1820 to maintain relations between the fur trappers and the Indians.
